It wasn’t until last August that I realized my music-listening style wasn’t terribly common. I would rarely listen to the actual words of a song, instead, focusing on the melody, different instrumental elements, and the overall emotional quality. Since being called out by a close friend for not listening carefully to the lyrics, I’ve put a little more deliberate effort into listening for the words of the song. Often a single phrase or two will stick out — for these type experiments: Send Me Down by HAIM.
